Albania has a short, ferocious high season and nine other months that almost nobody writes about. The sea is warm well into October, the mountains are impassable well into May, and the two facts rarely appear in the same guide. Here is the honest version.

Spring: the cities are yours
April and May are the months for Berat, Gjirokastra and Butrint. Temperatures sit in the low twenties, the light is clean, and you can photograph an Ottoman street without waiting for it to empty. The catch is the water — the Ionian does not become comfortable until mid-June, whatever the air temperature says.
Mountains: the Theth–Valbona pass usually clears of snow in the second half of May. Before that, the crossing is for people with proper gear and a reason.
Summer: two very different Augusts
The first is the one you have seen photographs of: Ksamil at capacity, sunbeds three rows deep, prices doubled. The second is fifteen kilometres inland, where the mountain villages are ten degrees cooler and half-empty because the entire country has gone to the coast.
Come in August if you want the sea. Come in September if you want the country.
Autumn: the best-kept secret
September is the answer to most versions of this question. The sea holds 25°C, the Albanian holidays end in the last week of August, and the light gets long. October adds the olive and grape harvests — and rain, increasingly, after the middle of the month.
- Early September — peak conditions, mid-season prices.
- Late September — the coast empties almost overnight.
- October — swim in the morning, hike in the afternoon, pack a jacket for the evening.
Winter: for a specific kind of traveller
Coastal Albania in winter is mild, wet and completely local. Tirana keeps working. The Accursed Mountains get real snow and a small, growing ski scene around Voskopoja and Dardha. Nothing on the coast is open, and that is either the point or a dealbreaker.
