Best Day Trips from Tirana: 5 Places Worth Leaving the Capital For
One of the best things about basing yourself in Tirana is how little time it takes to be somewhere completely different — a Roman amphitheatre, an Ottoman hilltop bazaar, a turquoise mountain lake. Albania is small enough that "day trip" rarely means losing a whole day to travel. Here's where to go, how long it takes, and why each place is worth it.
1. Durrës — Roman Ruins and a Working Beach Town (35–40 minutes away)
Durrës is the easiest day trip from Tirana, and also the most underrated. Most people know it only as a summer beach destination, but the old town holds one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in the Balkans, a Byzantine city wall, a Venetian tower, and an old bazaar area that barely makes it into guidebooks. It's an easy half-day if you're focused, or a full day if you add lunch and a walk along the seafront.
Good for: history + beach in one trip, travelers based in Tirana without a car (frequent buses run from the Regional Bus Station).
2. Kruja — Skanderbeg's Mountain Stronghold (45 minutes away)
Kruja is where Albania's national hero, Skanderbeg, held off the Ottoman Empire for decades, and the hilltop castle and museum tell that story well. Below the castle, the Old Bazaar is one of the best places in the country for genuine handmade crafts — rugs, filigree jewelry, wood carving — without the tourist markup you'd find in bigger cities. Most visitors need three to four hours here, easily combinable with lunch overlooking the valley.

3. Bovilla Lake & Gamti Mountain — Nature Close to the City (60–75 minutes away)
If Tirana starts to feel too urban, Bovilla is the fastest way out of it. The turquoise reservoir sits inside a steep canyon, and a moderate 30–40 minute hike up to the Gamti Mountain viewpoint rewards you with a panoramic view of the lake and surrounding peaks. It's also a popular spot for ATV and jeep tours if you'd rather explore the terrain on wheels than on foot.

4. Berat — The City of a Thousand Windows (roughly 2 hours away)
Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage town, and its Ottoman-era white houses stacked up the hillside are genuinely one of the most photogenic sights in the country. The castle at the top is still inhabited, with churches and a small mosque tucked inside its walls. It's a longer day, but doable — leave early, and you'll have time for the castle, the old quarters on both riverbanks, and a proper lunch.

5. Korça — A Long Day, But a Rewarding One (roughly 3 hours away)
Korça is genuinely a stretch as a single-day trip — plan on it eating most of your day — but it rewards the effort with a completely different atmosphere: pedestrian streets full of cafés, a striking Orthodox cathedral, a UNESCO-recognized old bazaar, and a food and museum scene that feels distinctly its own. If you can spare an overnight instead of squeezing it into one day, it's worth it; if not, an early departure and a guided itinerary will still let you see the highlights properly.
